Yes, we learnt that you can pick up an ice cube without getting your hand wet by: Put an ice cube in a glass of water, dangle a thread onto the ice cube; as the the temperature between the cube and water equalizes, the ice is melting. If you sprinkle salt onto the ice cube, the ice begins to melt faster than the surrounding water is becoming colder. So, to return to equilibrium, the temperature of the ice cube drops lower, causing the ice to freeze with the salt on it, forming crystals around the thread, so you can lift the ice cube by the thread. Experiment point: Crystallization. If you’re in Osogbo, Osun State, send your kids to RUBYGATES Preparatory School, where we jump start our children’s investigative and creative spirit.
